Justin Pinkerton grew up in the suburbs of San Diego where hip-hop was barely
audible. Although his first real musical inspiration was Flavor Flav, he was
definitely no hype-man. His real desire was to channel the likes of the Bomb
Squad, Marley Marl, and Pete Rock. Calling himself a DJ for his elementary
school hip-hop trio was quite a stretch considering he wouldn't touch a pair of
working turntables until college. In between his junior high days of tooting the
saxophone and his acquisition of two turntables, a mixer and a sampler,
Pinkerton was fiddling with the guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. Finally, in
college, his DJ gear took him to that level that he was aiming for back in 1990.
He began making beats and using samples in The Roots of Orchis, his band of then
4 years, that grew out of junior high friendships. He then took that love into
his own sample-based compositions under the moniker of Corsic. Corsic creates
sounds that draw from all of Pinkerton's influences over the years; from Nas to
Yes, Iron Maiden to The Meters. His vast interest in soundscapes, melodies and
rhythms make his work unique and exciting, calling to mind the intricate
arrangements of David Axelrod and the unique productions of Diamond D (except
pitched down a bit). Corsic's creativity is always expanding and will only
invite more to explore what he creates.
